No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in national works. They were completed at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
