Patients Coming Off Slimming Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users using these drugs must be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," described an individual.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on combined behavioural support.
